Our story

Founded by a chartered accountant with his pharmacist daughter, both knew nothing about farming. We started a biodynamic, organic durian orchard in Raub. We thought the foreign workers would know something  about farming, turns out they were fishermen ( they've only admitted it after working with us for one year ). Yes, we've started from scratch the hard way.
Why ?
Hmm.. Maybe it was a spiritual calling,
But we're pretty sure because the way we farm and produce food, it matters..
Big Time

Our biodynamiclly grown Musang King (durian ) tree on it's 5th year. No pesticide and chemical fertilisers from day 1. Many came to see when we started and thought it was not possible. Well, yes it is possible.

How we started...

We started as a small family farm, located in Raub, Malaysia, where it is well known for  Musang King durian due to its unique climate and location. We were lucky to secure a piece of land next to the reserved forest. We were not interested in spraying pesticides nor herbicides to keep insects away, nor sprinkling colourful pellets made from labs that are sold as fertilisers. We have seen how this way of farming has destroyed beautiful rivers and landscapes over the years. We were also not interested in getting cancer, that's why we opted for organic. After all, what is money in the bank when you are dying in pain in a hospital, or very likely, we often see people rejected from hospitals to be left to just die at home after spending their lifetime savings on so called treatments, because "nothing else could be done".

Farms filled with life force & Resistance, Biodynamic farming

Well I think most people has at least heard of organic, what on earth is biodynamic and how did we get there ? Well frankly speaking, biodynamic.. is, the earth. It is the sun, the moon, the stars, the planets and the earth, and the farm? It is a living being, not just a piece of land with dirt where you throw colourful pellets on it and expect trees to grow to the number you expect in a bank account. Surprise!

I (the pharmacist daughter) came to know about biodynamic farming during the post graduate medical course on anthroposophy. Our lecturer, Dr Daphne showed us a photo of biodynamic rice vs conventionally grown paddy, one was upright, strong and vibrant, the other (conventionally grown), was just bleh. I mean, not really upright when the sun is hot. I came to learn that, biodynamic grown crops comes with high life force, comes with natural taste and aroma, where conventionally grown food doesn't really come with much taste nor aroma, just water, pumped up by chemical fertilisers. Well, if you have tasted biodynamic grown fruits just once, you would get what I mean. And guess which type of food would you choose to nurture yourself ?

7 years after being shown the photo of the paddy, I had the chance to visit that particular Demeter-certified paddy farm in Nanjing, they survived a horrible storm while their neighbours with conventionally grown paddy were whacked out. Talk about vitality and resistance.

And so back to the story. After attending the medical course, it so happened that there was an indian teacher that was conducting a biodynamic course in Sungai Buloh. So I told my dad to try it out. He was the last person to register and the rest was history.

Biodynamic agriculture nurtures the land, the plants, the animals and the people, both mentally, and physically.
We regenerate soil by making biodynamic composts and we keep the land alive by letting animals roam and graze on it.

The Reality of getting into Biodynamic farming

When my dad started his biodynamic journey in 2019, not much was known. I left my pharmacist job and came back to join him 3 years after. There are people who has been doing it for years but most farmers couldn't grasp on how to make it work in Malaysia. The biodynamic herbs to make biodynamic preparations were difficult to get. The way to make biodynamic preparations were not clear.

Animals are an important integration for a biodynamic farm. Most farmers do not have cows or any other animals at all in a farm. Sounds strange aye ? After all, old Mcdonald had a lot of animals in his farm, well at least that's how the song was sung. But that is the reality in farming in Malaysia, and many other countries. Animals are"farmed" separately from plants.  Animals (poultry especially) are kept in cages, fed genetically modified grains, hormones and consistent doses of antibiotics. They never get to see the sunlight and most could barely stand with their own feet because the hormones kept them fat while their body weight has outgrown their feet. Yes, their feet is unable to withhold their body. Imagine feeding that to your child and think it is healthy. So as we can see, how we produce our food, and how we farm, matters.

And so, the Malaysia Demeter Association was formed. Organic, biodynamic farmer and people who simply wanted to support regenerative farming of various background came together. We supported each other and just kept trying things out, making biodynamic preps. Until one fine day we were chosen by the Biodynamic Federation Demeter international to host the Asian Pacific Biodynamic conference. From there, we connected with a lot of biodynamic farmers and many has guided us well on how to do biodynamic farming. So in reality, you need a community to support biodynamic farming.

Our members are those silly dumbasses who have decided to put cows into their durian orchards, because we believed in biodynamic farming. The theory is beautiful, the cows feed on the grass in the farm, generates a few tonne of cow manure for us as free fertilisers, the farm comes alive. Well the reality is ... What we have actually been through.. Nobody tells you that the cows run away and you have to spend a few days to bring it back. Ours ran back to the farm that we've bought it from and the farm owner with his indian stories delayed us for months before we were able to get it back. Our friend bought a cow and found it tied to another farm by somebody who claimed it was his cow. Of course you could argue that we didn't tie the cow well so it managed to run away. Well, we assigned a worker to take care of the cows and he tied it to a wooden pole and gone was the cow with the wooden pole.

So why are we dumbasses ? Well I go to the farm and sometimes see my papaya trees uprooted. I asked my workers what happened, turns out my cow had an itchy butt that day, the papaya tree was an excellent scratcher ( I sure hope it was or it was a bad sacrifice). They pass by and we see some of our small durian trees or branches folded into two. My friend from another biodynamic farm has a cow that is like a dog, she (the cow) had a feast on 200 pineapples and is a regular in hiding his durian (musangking). Yes, she knows how to open and eat a durian, at the right time. Yes, she is a cow.

You might ask why are we not fencing them up. Well, they need to graze the land for the land to be fertile. Their magnificent clean cow manure is the magic for the soil and farm to come alive. And on our 6th year of doing biodynamic farming, we can testify that this is true. By demeter standards, we need to give our cows enough space and fodder so that their welfare is taken care of. In Malaysia most organic farms belong to small owners, we do not have thousands of acres for the cows to roam on. Enough said, with experience we learned that it is a matter of planning, experience, and patience. Yeah, once you get there, the cows are one of the most joyful presence in the farm. Watching them move through the farm in a group happily and with their calves makes me so happy.

Our cows are free to roam wherever in the farm, leaving black gold wherever they go.

Farming with full heart capacity, Biodynamic Farming

Besides the technical difficulties and cow drama, a very realistic thing that we have to face as biodynamic farmers is really sustaining the first few years in operating the farm before anything decent actually can be produced. It is a matter of experience, and also a matter of time for soil to come into a good state. Trees also need time to grow. And many would have to face challenges with pests before the ecosystem is balanced. Indeed it is not easy to start, many gave up very early on. Those who stayed are here because of the heart and passion of producing good food for the community, sustainability and the environment.

Biodynamic farming builds resistance, in the soil, the plants, the animals, the land,
and in us.
A rather challenging start for farming, but yes it gets easier when the years come, and we are starting to taste the sweetness of it now.
